Mr and Mrs Start contacted Ruby Red Interiors to re-design their coastal holiday home in Kent. Based in a modern block, the property was tired and dated, and the Starts were looking for a complete renovation involving some building work.
After the consultation and once the design brief had been agreed, the transformation was underway!

‘We were both keen to have a sophisticated and modern design and, being by the sea, also wanted the apartment to have a fresh and subtle coastal feel. On top of that, we wanted to be pushed out of our comfort zone and be presented with ideas we wouldn’t have thought of ourselves.’

While most rooms were stripped back to basics with no major building works needed, the wall between the living room and hallway cupboard was moved to allow for a dining area in the lounge. The opening to the kitchen was also widened.
The Starts were keen to have a specially designed media wall rather than a shop bought product, so a bespoke unit was designed with cubby holes for ornaments, the TV and a mirror-backed electric fireplace at the bottom. The façade was clad in a robust, sea-inspired wallpaper.
In the main bedroom, the old-fashioned built-in wardrobes were removed to make way for a luxurious headboard and mirror wall.
‘The design process was really fun. Karen came up with beautiful designs for all the room, and she managed to capture exactly what we were looking for. We were especially thrilled with the ensuite: it’s not something we would have ever thought of on our own, and we absolutely love the colours chosen.’
